Stroke

Stroke is the fourth largest cause of death in the UK. There are more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year – that is one stroke every five minutes.

There have been a large number of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials looking at the effects of acupuncture in the management of acute stroke and for post-stroke rehabilitation. Most of the reviews have found acupuncture to be superior to conventional treatments, or to provide added value to them. This is particularly the case for post-stroke depression, aphasia (speech impairment) and dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing).
