Male Infertility

Surprisingly, most people still assume that infertility is more likely to affect a woman rather than a man. However, of all couples undergoing fertility treatment, 50% will be due to to female infertility and 50% due to male infertility.

Acupuncture can help with male infertility. A few studies indicate that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength in which the sperm swim). They also found acupuncture was associated with fewer structural defects in sperm and an increase of normal sperm.

Acupuncture may help in the treatment of male infertility in the following ways:

enhancing local microcirculation, by increasing the diameter and blood flow velocity of peripheral arterioles.

reducing inflammation, by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors.

improving sperm maturation in the epididymis, increasing testosterone levels, and reducing liquid peroxidation of sperm.
