Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which the median nerve is squeezed where it passes through the wrist. Around 1 in 10 people develop carpal tunnel syndrome at some point.

When the nerve is squeezed it can cause pain or aching, tingling or numbness in the affected hand. Symptoms usually occur at night, often waking the patient from sleep, but can be relieved within a few minutes by shaking the hand. Symptoms may develop during the day when the hands are used for carrying things, and for activities that involve holding them up, such as driving or using a keyboard. Although the condition affects people of all ages, it’s more common in pregnancy, middle aged and elderly people.
