  • Menopause

  • There's been lots in the media about the effects of menopause on women’s emotional and physical well-being. The menopause, defined as the end of the last menstrual period, normally occurs in women aged between 45 and 56, with a median age of 53 years (Hardy 2005). The change in hormone levels during the perimenopause and menopause, particularly the decline in levels of oestrogen, can cause a variety of symptoms, which can cause varying amounts of distress. About 30-70% of women in Western countries will experience vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats (Freeman 2007; Melby 2005). Other symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, aches and pains, headache, palpitations, vaginal dryness, genital and urinary symptoms are also common. For many women, their normal way of life and work become extremely difficult.

Research carried out (Lyttleton 1990/1991 and Maciocia 1998) suggest that acupuncture can be effective in treating symptoms commonly associated with the menopause. Other research shows that acupuncture treatment significantly reduces the frequency and severity
of hot flushes, improves other menopause related symptoms and improves quality of life in menopausal women.

I find acupuncture really effective at treating the symptoms of menopause, which can be quite debilitating for a lot of women. Not only does it help to reduce the frequency and intensity of the hot flushes, it helps with the feelings of anxiety, low mood, insomnia, problems with memory and concentration and muscle and joint pain.
