  • Knee Osteoarthritis

  • Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis affecting 80% of those aged 65 or older. It is the eighth leading cause of disability globally with the knee joint most frequently associated with disability. It affects about 10% of people aged over 55 years in the UK and affects twice as many women than men in those aged between 65 to 74 years. The main symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee are pain, stiffness, crepitus (a creaking, crunching, grinding sensation when you move the joint), swelling and your knee giving way.

Acupuncture is a recognised treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Ten trials representing 1456 participants were analysed and provided evidence that acupuncture is an effective treatment for pain and physical dysfunction associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Through research, it is believed that when a needle is inserted, it triggers a release of neurotransmitters in the brain called endorphins and enkephalins, which scientists believe reduce the sensation of pain. Research also shows that inserting a needle induces the production of cortisol, a hormone that helps control inflammation. Acupuncture can stimulate activity of other pain-relieving chemicals in the body as well.
